SUZANNE JAEGER studies philosophy after a career as a professional ballet dancer. Currently at York University, she is writing a doctoral dissertation on the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty. What is it to fall in love? Some say love is an experience based ultimately on a lack. The desire for the other comes from a lack in oneself which seeks fulfilment from outside. The dancer, like other performers, desires the audience, needs the audience not only as witness, but as lover. You can dance in the living room alone, but do you not fancy being seen by someone? Because performers live in the presence of others, desired by them and adored, they become our gods. We want to be like them. They are exemplars of a full life, a life lived creatively and affirmed. Performers respond to this adoration by sharing themselves in return. They become intimate with us and with the world. So I sit in the theatres of Toronto craving intimacy with these performers, with this dancer on the stage. I watch to adore.
